WHERE TO PRACTICE

Public Ranges + Short Game Areas

  • Coronado GC – MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE RANGE OF ALL TIME!!! It's a ma-and-pop driving range that is cash only. The lights come on at night, and they are open until 9 PM. The baskets are cheap ($10 for a ….), and they have happy hour from 4-8 PM every day with a couple of bucks off of buckets and beers (YES, THEY HAVE BEER AND WINE IN THEIR GOLF SHOP). The range is off of grass, and sometimes it is not in the best shape (I always go to the end of the range where it's flatter), but they do have 2 putting greens and a 9 hole course if you feel like playing. I literally wear a T-shirt and shorts to this place, and it's the best. If you're going in the evening, be sure to arrive early, or else you will be waiting for a spot to open up.
  • Papago - Love hitting balls with a view of the Papago red rocks right in front of you. Their chipping area is fairly small, with a bunker to hit out of, and their putting green is pretty big with a lot of undulations. Grab a beer at Lou's to reward yourself after your session.
  • McDowell Mountain – Located in North Scottsdale and one of the few public driving ranges in the area. Pretty view of the valley looking down the front of the driving range. There's a small putting and chipping green to the right of the range and a bigger, flatter one on the front side of the property next to the parking lot.
  • TPC Scottsdale – Stadium has changed its policy to only let you practice at their facility if you have tee time for the day. Champions have a public range, but it fills up quickly - it also has a nice, fast putting green next to the first tee. However, their chipping green is fairly small and can get crowded (it's located on the north side of the building). They do utilize the mats at Champions as well, so on those days, spots fill up very fast.
  • Legacy Golf Club – I love practicing here! The facility is beautiful and always taken care of. Their range is long, and the putting green is massive and always rolls fast. Their chipping area has a couple of bunkers as well. Highly recommend booking a lesson here, they have a huge performance center on the back of the range with indoor hitting bays, another range, and a great short game area.
  • The Raven – Their range is fairly big and in decent shape, and they do have Pro V1s for their range balls. They have a bunker next to a small chipping green that can get crowded, but their putting green is fairly wide and rolls pretty good. They always have music playing, which is nice.
  • Dobson Ranch – Located in Mesa, so it's a little further out, but this is one of the more popular spots to practice at. Pretty big range with Toptracer if you want to try it out, decent sized putting green and chipping area and one of the few lighted spots! Very family and beginner-friendly.

*A good amount of public courses in the area require you to have a tee time to use their driving range (to limit overcrowding and damage to the grass), but there are many places to hit balls and work on your game.
